The Baltic (corner of The Cut)

Friday evening, off to the Young Vic and so we tried the pre-theatre menu £24.50 for 3 courses and £22.50 for 2.

It's a spacious, light, airy setting and as it's a hot evening the pubs in the vicinity are heaving so this is tranquil in comparison. There's a buzzy outdoor space and stylish interior bar area leading to the high ceilinged, wooden beamed, modern bright restaurant.

Attentive and prompt service.

The drinks menu has a great choice of flavoured vodkas which are the bar's speciality. There's also a good wine list with ample wine by the glass and some reasonably priced options.

A lovely artisanal bread basket was offered to us (more than once) - pumpkin bread, sourdough, rye and lots more, plus some hors d'oevres of crispy cornichons and pickled cabbage.

The pre-theatre menu had a good choice of dishes to suit all flavours, despite which, all three of us opted for the crab and crayfish salad.

We followed this with the roast duck with apple and red cabbage, and a seared salmon dish. So that ought to have satisfied our appetites until they bought us the dessert menu,

It was irresistible. Hungarian Chocolate and Hazelnut Torta with Rum Ice cream, and a Hazelnut Parfait with caramel sauce and berries followed - and they were scrumptious.

Even the tea arrived in exotic vessels. Quite something we didn't sleep through the play.

It's diverse, well flavoured, well presented food - really pleasing and good value. We would recommend The Baltic for entertaining, a special evening with friends and family, or a special date.
