City Social - Perfect Choice For A Special Occasion

City Social

With City Social as part of Jason Atherton's growing commercial empire, is our modern super-chef spread too thin? Myself and a party of 7 had the opportunity to taste and observe a number of dishes. Starting off in the bar, the cocktail list is extensive and imaginative adding a twist to old favourites, as well as providing a journey of discovery.

My first cocktail was tequila based called 'Herbal Effervescence'. This was a champagne cocktail in disguise and quite delicious. My second cocktail was called a 'Mexican au Pear', a mixture of smoky mezcaland a splash of ginger beer. If you love mezcal, you will love this cocktail. There is some very clever cocktail chemistry going on at City Social and all the members of our party were smiling.

The wine list is as good as you would expect at a Michelin starred restaurant (and as pricey). It was difficult to find wines at less than £40 a bottle. My starter was the seafood linguine. It is one of my favourite dishes and certainly this was one of the best I have ever tasted. Crispy squid and plump seafood topped with a razor clam, served with a bisque that was so delicious I was quite depressed when I finished my last mouthful. Others members of our party enjoyed the crab, duck and quail all of which proved to be delicious. The majority of our party chose fish dishes for their mains. I had an exquisite sea bream. Another member of our party had the John Dory which was to die for, whilst the Dover Sole was accompanied by murmurs of pleasure. Great ingredients speak for themselves. The vegetarian dishes were good but there was a consensus that more vegetarian choices should be available.

Desserts were as good as one would expect with the stand out dish being the Valrhona Chocolate tart. Service was impeccable throughout.

Though a little dark, the restaurant was full and buzzing with the sounds of good times. This is an excellent choice for a special occasion.
