3 South Place Bar & Grill
South Place Hotel boasts two separate and highly idiosyncratic places to eat. It’s said that the best fish in the City is eaten high up at The Angler restaurant. Meanwhile on the ground floor, 3 South Place Bar & Grill serves more luscious sea food, beautiful steaks and some “off the beaten track” mains – try the lobster macaroni for instance. Seared scallops with blythburgh bacon, samphire and fish veloute are particularly recommended to start. For the main course, unless you’re veggie, the meat makes a lot of sense, competing easily with similar fare at the Hawksmoor. The grill is well stocked with British Black Angus beef, grass fed and dry aged for a minimum of 28 days. The care taken by the master butcher and the chef really shows. The kitchen produces excellent food quickly, with fuss-free service and the place buzzes with business lunch chatter in daylight. The night scene is more relaxed, more slinky but equally impressive. For an aperitif or after-dinner drinks try rum cocktails at the Secret Garden bar on the first floor – an oasis in the City.
Cheese of the Month
Ossau-Iraty an award-winning cheese produced in the Northern Basque Country in France. It is one of only two sheep’s milk cheeses granted AOC (appellation d’origine contrôllée) status. Of ancient origin, traditionally made by the shepherds in the region. It is light in colour yet has great depth of flavour. This is a creamy, almondy, complex cheese with salt crystals and a rich, velvety finish. It won the World Cheese Awards a few years ago – once you experience it you will see why
We find it works beautifully with an Alsatian wine such as Pinot Gris and is a stunning addition to any sophisticated cheese platter.
